Let’s Get Physical

Daniel Caeiro is a flesh and bone digital guy. Yesterday, the quoted article in his blog said the following:
“It’s not about the technology.
Technology is a by-product of this new marketing revolution. You can’t blame the IT department for a lack of success. In the end, you can remove all of the technology we’ve been afforded and your job would still be the same: get people to really care about your brand, do it in a real way and get them loyal to whatever it is that you’re selling.

This statement, coming from two “digital men” makes me happy.
Two years ago I got angry at Upload Lisboa (nothing against Virgínia, I know how much effort is behind this organization) because I’ve heard some nonsense related to this issue and last year was good to see that things have changed.
There seemed to be a central theme that linked all the presentations. This theme is no longer “virtual / technological / digital” and became the “real”. It has been spoken mainly about people, the contact between people, people with people, the contact between people and brands that are represented by people and people representing the brand and they have to present to other people … and I think you already got the idea.
It‘s a fact we can take much advantage of digital, even I can not complain. For example, LinkedIn has led me to “the table” with some of the most important people I met until today which in recent years have completely changed the way I work. Therefore, there are various forms of contact with people but I still believe that one of the best ways to get to the contact – and to keep in touch – is establishing a con”tact.”∗

Consulai Boards

I work with Consulai and with other brands they’ve developed for almost 10 years (I know … it must be almost a national record). No, I was’ t asked for a new brand or site or a brochure, or to tap the stationary. They would be present in a rotary event – with two more companies, each of which had an audience – and asked me to help them think of something to captivate the attention of the audience, something that people could “take” home.

A guy thinks – … Uau, lets create a Facebook page to promote the thing, a large panel with a graphic interactive talk about our services, a thing where the gang can play and … – Rui, there’s no money, wake up! And the “shark” that’s going to be next door is already doing this…

We’ ve created a contest, prepared a list of questions that had two possible answers – yes or no – and created a response system powered by the arms, which is to say that we have created two plates of those scoring system in which each one had an answer. One of the plates had a Yes and the other had a … Yes. And no, we weren’t mistaken. The two plates were Yes.
Two things, in my point of view, made the difference. The Yes / Yes triggered an immediate emotional response and the physical act has caused people to feel part of what was going on there – they went from spectators to participants. At the end there was still time to offer an apple – there was no break – and a year later people still talk about that Consulai presentation.

6 Week Project at HPI – School of Design Thinking
I can’t open the game about the partner of this project – I can only say it’s for an exhibition in a museum – but I can report the output of the creative exercise of last Monday.

We’ve made two prototypes in my group project. One explored the concept of augmented reality and use of new technologies and the other, a game where we used the original floor tiles at the museum as “human” game board – imagine yourself playing Twister in a room at Queluz Palace, it’s something like that. I don’t know which of the ideas is going forward but it’s likely that both of them go. I only recall the reaction of my colleagues when they saw two people on the ground rolled with the hands and feet. General hysteria and – almost – spontaneous adherence. Sometimes it seems like the recent past is more exciting than the present or it was “only” the involvement of the body and senses in the experience.

Upload 2.0 Conference
One of the speakers of this 2010 “digital conference” spoke about the power of the embrace – it was given an example of an Australian man who hugs people on the street – and proposed to give hugs to the entire audience at the end of his speech. It’s really my kind of thing, I love this shit. I still believe that such actions bring real happiness to people, moreover, if I didn’t I wouldn’t stand for 40 minutes waving to cars in front of “Monumental Cinema” every time I go to the movies…(There was a guy there waving at people everyday for 18 years in a row) so, once the presentation ends, “give me that hug”, I said . I do not know if I was the only one, but by the look on his face I must have been the only unknown person to do so. I don’t know if he remembers or not – it will be a good test to try to understand if he remembers – but I remember .. note: that there is nothing sexual about it.
At that same Upload I was amazed with Diogo’s presentation, of Couture, and I gave him an enthusiastic hand shake and a business card. Not a month later – and I believe it’s not because I have a pretty face – we were working together.

These are just three small examples that tell us that fortunately the good ideas and the ideas that create more roots can still be a smiling face to face, a cut sheet of paper, or a game of contact. Technology can certainly enhance these interactions and provide a platform for the exchange of interpersonal experiences but it cannot replace the feeling of the primary emotions. Thankfully, there are still men and women with a voice, linked to the “digital” who recognize that power.

Daniel Caeiro and I – 20 years ago – shared the same school. I didn’t remember him but – a few months ago – barely looking at me he seemed to remember something. Apparently, by that time, Daniel wanted to stick with one of the goals of the football field we used to call “Recreio Coberto.” It seems like I didn’t found it funny, squeezed his neck and basically lifted his feet off the ground. All right … or this guy was kind of thug or I was a beast, but believe me if I say that he never forgot about that.
 Daniel, friends?!

∗ Com+tacto in portuguese means “with tact”

……………………………………………………………………………………….

Ontem, o artigo citado no blog dele dizia o seguinte:
“It’s not about the technology.
Technology is a by-product of this new marketing revolution. You can’t blame the IT department for a lack of success. In the end, you can remove all of the technology we’ve been afforded and your job would still be the same: get people to really care about your brand, do it in a real way and get them loyal to whatever it is that you’re selling.

Let’s Get Physical?

As duas placas tinham Sim.
Duas coisas, a meu ver, fizeram a diferença.
